I wonder if there are no answers.
The New York Yankees have lost their longest losing streak in two years. The Yankees dropped an 8-1 decision to the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 20 (ET). They have lost seven games since the Miami Marlins on Sept. 13, their longest losing streak since Sept. 5-11, 2021.
Ace Gerrit Cole, the AL Cy Young Award favorite this year, had a disastrous outing. He allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk in four innings to take the loss.
After getting through the first inning on 12 pitches, Cole was shaky in the second, giving up a leadoff single to Adam Duvall and a double to Jaren Duran, then walking Pablo Reyes on a full count to load the bases. He then induced a grounder to Connor Wong to keep the tying run at third base, but the next batter, Luis Urias, knocked him out with one out.
Wong threw a 91-mph cutter low and away from the plate, but Urias’ bat caught it just right, sending it over the wall in left-center for a grand slam. It was the moment the Yankees essentially took over the game.
In the sixth, Cole walked Reyes to lead off the inning and then hit a two-run shot to right-center off Wong to make it 6-0. On a full count, he threw Wong an eight-pitch, 98-mph fastball, but it sailed into the middle of the plate for a 379-foot arch.
When the ace falters, the hitters need to step up in the offense, and the Yankees bats were silent. They managed just two hits against three Boston pitchers on the day, including starter Cutter Crawford. Aaron Judge hit a home run to break up the shutout.
Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Judge smashed a 92-mph fastball up the middle of Crawford’s first pitch over the center field wall. It was his 24th home run of the season, his second straight day of cannonball. It was his fifth since May 29, when he returned from a toe injury. But that was all the Yankees offense could muster.
“I know that’s a boring answer, but we tried to win the game today, and we came into the game with the expectation that today was the day to win,” Boone said after the game, “and that’s how we look at the game and where we are right now. Our players are like sick animals in a lot of ways.”
The lethargy of the hitters is severe. During the seven-game losing streak, the Yankees offense is batting .181 (39-for-216) as a team and averaging 2.14 runs per game. They rank last out of 30 teams in both categories over the same period.
USA Today wrote, “The genuine, unadulterated hope surrounding the Yankees these days comes in two forms. One is when Aaron Judge steps to the plate, and the other is when Gerrit Cole is on the mound.” “So when Cole gave up six runs in four innings, the Yankees couldn’t avoid their seventh straight loss.
The Yankees, who are last in the American League (AL) East, are 60-63, five games behind fourth-place Boston in the division. They have lost six straight against the Red Sox.메이저놀이터
