The traditional ‘Daegu Three’ all made it to the quarterfinals. When Pohang Steelworks is added to the mix, the rise of ‘Daegu and Gyeongbuk’ stands out.
Daegu Go defeated Seoul powerhouse Deoksugo 8-1 in the round of 16 at the 51st Bonghwangdae National High School Baseball Tournament at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul on March 3 to advance to the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Gyeongdong defeated Cheongju 12-4 to defend Seoul’s pride, while Gyeongnam won a hard-fought 9-8 victory over Busan Go. As a result, the quarterfinal matchups for the tournament were set for Se AD – Jemulpo, Daegu Sangwon – Gyeongbuk, Pohang Steel – Gyeongdong, and Gyeongnam – Daegu.
In addition to Daegu Go, Daegu Sangwon Go and Gyeongbuk Go, who reached the quarterfinals the previous day, are expected to compete for the title of ‘Daegu’s champion’. Daegu Sangwon Go was the strongest team in the early years of the phoenix era, winning the 1973 and 1974 titles and reaching the final in 1975. The team that ended Daegu Sangwongo’s three-game losing streak at the time is currently the team with the most wins in high school baseball’s four major tournaments (22). Gyeongbuk Go has been winning even without ace Jeon Mir and is looking forward to its first championship in eight years since 2015, when Park Se-jin and Choi Chung-yeon were the stars of the show.

After exchanging four runs in the first inning, the game between Gyeongdong High and Cheongju came down to the sixth inning. With a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning, Gyeongdong High tied the game at 5-5 with a double to right field by Choi Sung-min (2) after a leadoff single by Kim Dong-hyun (2) and an infield single by Lee Tae-hoon (3). In the sixth inning alone, 11 batters came to the plate to complete the seven-run big inning. Gyeongdong High starter Yoon Han-sun (3 years) gave up four runs on three hits and four walks with one strikeout in five innings, but the runs were all unearned due to a combination of fielding errors.
The ‘Busan Rivalry Game’ between Gyeongnam and Busan was hot. After a two-out walk and a hit batter in the top of the first inning, Busan Go took a two-run lead with a two-run double to left-center field by Park Sung-jun (3). A walk was followed by consecutive RBI singles from the seventh through ninth batters to make it 5-0, and it looked like the game would be easy. However, Gyeongnam State’s comeback was not easy. In the bottom of the second inning, they scored six runs on five hits, two four-pitchers, and an error to turn the tide. Down 5-8 in the seventh inning, Busan Go tied the game at 8-8 with RBI singles by Park Sung-jun and Kang Min-ki (1 year), but Gyeongnam Go scored the final run in the bottom of the seventh with an infield single by Song Jun-young (3 years) and closed out the eighth and ninth innings to end the fierce battle.메이저놀이터
Trailing 1-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Deoksugo gave up a double to Daegu’s Lee Seung-min (3) and then walked Park Woo-yeol (3) on an intentional pitch. However, Daegu’s No. 5, Yang Hyun-jong (3), came through with a two-run triple to center field to break the tie. Then, No. 6 Kwon Hyuk-bin (2 years) drove in a run with a single to left.
