It is the first living event to be held in Yanggu in 19 years since 2004 and the first living event for residents since the establishment of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.

From that day, 7866 athletes (1845 officials and 6021 athletes) from 18 cities and counties in the province will compete in 22 official sports including track and field, swimming, soccer, baseball, tennis, basketball, and table tennis, three demonstration sports including taekwondo, ground golf, and park golf, and an exhibition sport, drones.

The official ceremony began with the entrance of the city and county flag bearers, followed by the national anthem, the opening declaration by Yoon Jong-ho, the raising of the tournament flag, the performance of the opening anthem, the welcome speech, the congratulatory speech, and finally the athletes’ pledge.

In his welcome speech, Seo Heung-won said, “As more than 7,000 athletes and officials from each city and county are visiting, we have done our best to prepare the infrastructure for the tournament.” He added, “I hope this tournament will become a festival where all the sportsmen and women in the province can harmonize and build friendships through sports. We promise to run a pleasant tournament so that they can return home with a good impression of Yanggu.”

Yang Hee-gu, Chairman of the Provincial Sports Council, said in his address, “This tournament is being held under the new name of the Gangwon Special Autonomous Province People’s Life Sports Competition. I am confident that Gangwon Sports will become even more special in the era of special autonomy.” “Finally, we hope that the enthusiasm and energy of this event will lead to the successful hosting of the 2023 Gangwon World Forest Expo in one week and the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games in 16 days.”

“In Samcheok, where the Games were held last year, I promised to increase the budget for the Games by 30 percent. Now, a year later, I have increased it to 37%. But I don’t think you can realize it,” he said. “I changed my tactics, and I have been attending the Governor’s Life Sports Competition for a while now, but there is no prize money for the competition. Therefore, we will create a new prize for the Governor’s Life Sports Competition to be held from next year.”

Kwon Hyuk-yeol, Chairman of the Provincial Assembly, said, “The 31st Living Sports Competition will be more than just a sports competition, but a festival that unites residents and brings everyone together. I think it will also be a powerful driving force to move the special autonomous region forward.” “In July last year, the Provincial Assembly revised the Sports Promotion Ordinance and became the first in the country to mandate support for sports operation costs. We will continue to do our best to expand physical education facilities and expand the base of daily physical education so that all residents can lead healthy lives.”

“This tournament is a festival for the people of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and it can be said that it is a place for dialogue with the people of Gangwon Province after the special departure of Gangwon Province in June.” “I hope that the athletes will believe in the time and passion they spent and gain valuable achievements by fully demonstrating their skills. I wish everyone who participated with the Gangwon Education Family the best of luck.”

“I hope that everyone who came here today will be safe until the end of the competition,” said Han Ki-ho. “I hope they will take the energy of today to each of the 18 cities and counties and pour it into the further development of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province,” said Noh Yong-ho, a member of the National Assembly.

Next, the athletes’ pledge, which expressed their desire for the successful hosting of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, which is 126 days away, and their willingness to actively participate, began. The oath was taken by Park Kwang-soon and Choi Bo-yoon, who represented Yanggu County in the swimming event. The Gangwon Special Self-Governing City and County Sports Association Council (Chairman Kim Sang-ha) showed its support by purchasing 20 million won in tickets for the successful hosting of the 2023 Gangwon World Forest Expo.

The official ceremony ended with a theme performance by the Chuncheon Youth Choir to celebrate the opening of the event. After the ceremony, popular singers such as Park Ji-hyun, Yang Ji-eun, and Jin Hye-jin performed and Yanggu County’s first drone light show was held.
