“Good, One more!”
It’s the 15th, local time in the United States. It was an early morning for the SK Basketball team. They gathered at Etika at 9 a.m. to warm up. They had a skills training session scheduled. This is a great opportunity to learn new basketball skills, and while there are now many places in Korea that teach skills, it’s still a different experience to play basketball in the United States. There’s hip-hop music playing, graffiti and other designs. The atmosphere was electric. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits and focused.
The class is represented by NBA player Darren Michael Collison. Collison was drafted by the New Orleans Hornets in the first round (21st overall) of the 2009 NBA Draft. It’s an elite class. Last year, players ranked 1-3 overall in the NBA went through the program. There’s no doubt that it’s hands-on. For about an hour and a half, the players ran and ran until their uniforms were drenched in sweat.
The expectations were especially high for the first-time players. They include Kim Soo-hwan, Moon Ga-on, and Baek Jiwoong. “Skill training is very advanced in Korea, so it didn’t feel foreign to me. This is one of the reasons why SK chose the United States for their training camp. The program has been running for more than a decade, although it took a break in the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several other clubs have benchmarked the program. SK head coach Jeon Hee-chul said, “It’s been around since I was a player, so it’s been a long time. I think we went to the Falklands a lot in the early days,” he said, adding, “The players’ satisfaction is very good. They’re quick learners and they soak it up like a sponge,” he said.
