It was once called the ultimate “filial sport. It was a sport loved by the entire nation. Not anymore. It’s just a ‘past glory’. Hangzhou dreams of reviving it. Boxing.
South Korea was once a global boxing powerhouse. It won three gold medals at the Olympics and a total of 59 gold medals at the Asian Games. Add in the silver and bronze medals, and it’s a sport that has brought home countless medals.
Not anymore. Winning a single medal is no longer enough. In Doha 2006 and Guangzhou 2010, she took gold. They won two gold medals in Incheon in 2014, and their total medal tally at Jakarta-Palembang 2018 was one gold.
At the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, South Korea will send one athlete in each of the seven men’s weight classes and six women’s weight classes. Qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics is also on the line. Another reason to do well.
On the women’s side, boxers qualify for the semifinals in the 50-54-57-60kg category. In the remaining 66kg and 75kg categories, they will have to go all the way to the final. The men also qualify for the Olympics if they reach the final.
Basically, it”s a very difficult sport to win a gold medal. There”s a lot of boxing powerhouses in Asia, so there”s no difference in difficulty compared to the Olympics.
The biggest favorite will be Oh Yeon-ji (33, Ulsan Metropolitan Government), who will try to win her second consecutive Asian Games. She is the favorite in the women’s lightweight (60kg) category.
She has won 10 consecutive national titles, three Asian Championships (2015-2017-2022) and two World Championship bronze medals (2018-2023).
Most notably, she won Korea’s only gold medal in boxing at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang. It was also the first Asian Games gold medal for Korean women’s boxing.
The Korean boxing team will be looking forward to the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. While the home team, China, may have a lot of momentum behind them, Oh is still one of the best in the world.
Seong Soo-yeon, a women’s middleweight (75 kilograms), will also be interesting to watch. She won South Korea’s first ever medal in women’s boxing at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. She won a bronze medal. After a difficult time due to injuries, she will return to the Asian Games after 13 years.메이저놀이터
Men’s boxing is also struggling. At Jakarta-Palembang 2018, no boxer made it to the quarterfinals. This time around, we’re hoping for at least a quarterfinalist. Then we can look up.
Boxing at the Asian Games will start on Sept. 24 and end on Oct. 5. There will be matches every day except for a day off on October 2. Two gold medals will be awarded on October 3, five gold medals on October 4, and six gold medals on October 5.
