KT WIZ pitcher William Cuevas suffered a shocking blow when he was hit by a dinosaur bat four days ago. Cuevas was caught off guard by teammate Hwang Jae-gyun’s “drop-the-ball” grounder, and he made a bad throw of his own.
Cuevas started Game 1 of the playoffs against the NC Dinos at Katy Weeds Park in Suwon on October 30, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits (one home run) with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings.
KT’s starting batting order that day was Kim Sang-soo (shortstop), Hwang Jae-gyun (third base), Anthony Alford (left field), Park Byung-ho (first base), Jang Sung-woo (catcher), Cho Yong-ho (right field), Moon Sang-chul (designated hitter), Bae Jeong-dae (center field), and Park Kyung-soo (second base).
Cuevas started to falter in the first inning. After giving up a leadoff single to Son As-seob to right-center, Cuevas gave up a double to left-center to Park Min-woo to put runners on second and third with no outs. Cuevas struck out Park to get out of the jam, but gave up a sacrifice fly to left field to Martin.
After avoiding further damage in the top of the first, Cuevas added his second run of the game in the top of the second when he faced a full count with leadoff hitter Oh Young-soo and sent a six-pitch 146 km/h fastball over the left-center field fence for a massive 120-meter solo home run.
Cuevas continued to struggle in the top of the third. Cuevas got off to a shaky start in the top of the third inning when leadoff hitter Park Min-woo’s grounder was misplayed by third baseman Hwang Jae-gyun. Cuevas then gave up a single to left field to pinch hitter Park Gun-woo. The next batter, Kwon Hee-dong, lined a single to right field to score the fourth run of the inning.
KT rallied in the bottom of the third when leadoff hitter Moon Sang-chul hit a solo home run to right off NC starter Pedi.굿모닝토토
However, Cuevas was unable to settle down in the top of the fourth inning. After giving up a leadoff walk to Kim Hyung-joon, Cuevas laid down a sacrifice bunt by Kim Joo-won and threw to second base, but an error by Ak Song-gu put runners on first and second with no outs.
Cuevas was forced to throw a wild pitch to end the threat of runners on second and third. The next batter, Son As-seob, hit a single to right field, giving up five runs. Eventually, the KT bench made a move. KT pulled Cuevas and put Uhm Sang-baek on the mound. The next two pitchers, Uhm Sang-baek and Lee Sang-dong, gave up additional runs in the top of the fourth inning, increasing Cuevas’ total to seven.
