Choi Hyun-min, the silent 11th man on the court, was an unsung hero in the Sono victory

Choi Hyun-min (195 cm, F) helped Sono to victory.

Goyang Sono defeated Anyang Jungkwanjang 84-82 in a regular season game of the 2023-2024 Jungkwanjang Professional Basketball League on Thursday at Anyang Indoor Gymnasium.

The Sono have been in a bit of a slump lately, going 1-4 in their last five games, but the win puts them in sole possession of eighth place, ahead of Daegu Korea Gas Corporation.

In this game, SONO’s offense worked well in the first and second quarters. Lee Jung-hyun (186 cm, G) and Jeon Sung-hyun (188 cm, F) made bold attacks from inside and outside to take a 54-45 lead. The frontcourt guards and authentic shooters dictated the game and easily penetrated Jung Kwan-jang’s defense.

In addition, Choi Hyun-min, a key part of SONO’s forward lineup, came in for Kim Min-wook (205 cm, C) in the middle of the first quarter to support the team’s offense. Choi scored his first points with 4:24 left in the first quarter, taking a pass from Lee Jung-hyun and hitting a three-pointer from the right corner. It was impressive that Choi was in the right position to take advantage of the gap in the defense.

Choi’s performance continued in the second quarter. In the second quarter, he was active in rebounding, grabbing five rebounds, four of which were offensive, and he was good at boxing out.

In particular, with 4:33 left in the second quarter, after Jarrod Jones (F, 201 cm) missed a three-pointer, Choi drove to the basket from the three-point line to get the rebound and drew a foul on Duvon Maxwell (F, 201 cm) to get the free throw.

As such, Choi was able to utilize his long-range power and shooting to either create or assist in two-man games with Sono’s guards, including Lee Jung-hyun and Han Ho-bin (180 cm, G).

Choi cooled off a bit in the fourth quarter, but it was encouraging to see him create an assist with a quick pass to D’Yonte Davis with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter when the SONO lead was cut to 77-80. This gave the SONO the momentum they needed to make a comeback and eventually pull out a hard-fought win.

Choi finished the night with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. It was the third-highest scoring game for SONO’s domestic players, behind Jeon Sung-hyun (20 points) and Lee Jung-hyun (19 points), and his first double-digit scoring game of the season. 보스토토 도메인

Sono head coach Kim Seung-ki is concerned about the Carrot’s thin forward line. Up front, Lee Jung-hyun and Jeon Seong-hyun are not fully healthy due to their participation in the Hangzhou Asian Games, and foreign players Jones and Davis are not performing as expected.

As such, Sono needs to build up its strength in the forward line to compete with other teams in the tournament. Choi’s performance today could be a confidence booster and a hidden weapon for Sono in the upcoming season.

We’ll have to wait and see if he can bounce back from this game.
