Brooks Reilly (35-New York Mets), a former member of the KBO’s Lotte Giants and a “reverse export success story,” will continue to play in a Mets uniform in 2024.
MLB Trade Rumors (MLBTR), which covers major league transfers, reported on Thursday (KST), citing John Heyman of the New York Post, that “the Mets have exercised the club option on the left-handed pitcher, keeping him with the team through 2024 at a salary of $6.5 million (KRW8.28 billion) instead of a $1.25 million (KRW1.64 billion) buyout.”
Selected by the Cubs in the sixth round (200th overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, Reilly made his major league debut in 2012 and went 1-2 with a 7.04 ERA in 14 games over two seasons through 2013. Signed by Lotte of the KBO prior to the 2015 season, Railey served as the team’s left-handed ace for five seasons from 2015 to 2019, posting a 48-53 record with a 4.13 ERA.
He returned to the United States in 2020, signing a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds, but struggled in his return to the major leagues, posting a 9.00 ERA in four starts. Designated for assignment (DFA) in August of that year, Railey turned things around after joining the Houston Astros. In 17 games, he went 1-6 with a 3.94 ERA and one save, making himself a force in the Houston bullpen.
Railey boosted his stock in 2021 by posting his first double-digit hold of the year (2-3 with 10 saves and a 4.78 ERA in 58 games). After signing a two-year, $10 million free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays following the season, Railey had a breakout year in 2022, going 1-2 with a 2.68 ERA and 25 saves in 60 appearances.
After being acquired by the New York Mets in a trade following the 2022 season, he was named to Team USA’s roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC), but had to withdraw due to injury just before the tournament. After a disappointing start to the season through April, he has rebounded to post a 1-2 record with 25 saves and a 2.80 ERA in 66 games this season. Railey’s contract has an option for the 2024 season. The Mets had no reason not to exercise the option on the left-hander, who has been a dominant force in the bullpen.
